  • Spelling Update!

Wow! Students are really progressing with the differentiated spelling lists!  All students have been progressing through the spelling categories!  I have seen so much progress from the beginning of the year already!  Word Sort Wednesday seems to be one of the favorite weekly activities.  Students are noticing spelling patterns that we have been studying and making a connection to what they are reading and writing!

  • Spelling Update

Students have embraced our new way of learning about the many different spelling patterns.  After fall break, we will begin week 6 of spelling which focuses on the spelling patterns that make the /ow/ sound as in now.  Each week, we have a mini lesson that explains the patterns we are studying.  Students create a chart in their spelling notebooks in which we sort words based on the spelling patterns.  For example, week 6 focuses on the /ow/ sound so, we will look at the patterns -ow, -ouse, -ound, etc. Together, we will develop a word bank with words that each of the patterns.  Afterwards, students choose ten words from our word bank to be their spelling words for the week.  Not only does this allow students to have words that are on their specific spelling level but, it also gives them a chance to have some choice in their learning. On Tuesday, students complete an independent activity in class using their spelling words.  On Wednesday, they complete a word sort in which they sort the words they picked along with the ten words that I have assigned them.  On Thursday, students take a spelling practice test and share tips on how they remember the pattern with their peers.  Friday is assessment day! :)

  • New Spelling Words

    Great News!

Students have officially started their spelling as of this week! This year, students will have 20 spelling words each week.  Ten of the words will be words that I have selected based on the Words Their Way Spelling Inventory that students took at the beginning of the school year!  The next ten words will be words that students select from our class "word bank" that we develop with each weekly spelling skill.  I know! It sounds tough but, students are embracing this change!  They are excited about being able to select spelling words that they feel they need to work on.  These changes ensure that your child's spelling needs are being met on an indivudal basis.
